Strip down

Hi All,
Well I have finished the strip down of my T20 1960 engine and gearbox. I am going to need at the very least a new plain main bearing and I am not sure of the condition of the crank among other things. In any case a new plain bearing needs to be line reamed and that is beyond my abilities. So now I am at the point when my expertise (such as it is ha ha!) runs out and I need to locate a reliable and not too expensive source of expertise to move forward. Does anyone know of a good machine shop / company in the North West of the UK who would have experience with these machines? I know that I can use the net to find someone but personal recommendation goes a long way. Any thoughts anyone?

Tonytrev
If you U2U Andreas (T20c) he'll be able to give you all the gen he's used to do exactly what you have to do.
His T20c expired not too long ago and he sent the engine to Serco and they fitted a new mains bush and also a crank, rod and little end bush.
Within a week he had it running again.

Just done a bit of Googling to confirm fate of SERCO. Found a forum for pre'65 trials that reported they appear to have closed ---- phone never answered and one guy went to Brighouse and found house for sale and nobody around. The trials guys appear to rate: http://www.upbuk.co.uk/pre65.html
for parts. Some interesting stuff but don't know if they deal with standard Cub stuff or undertake mains rebushing etc. Worth giving them a call.
Tony, I will ask some of the local classic bikers if they can suggest somebody to do your engine work.

Thanks all, I had been told that Serco had closed down but I will try anyway. Thanks Chris, perhaps you will come up with something not too far away

As I understand it Serco has not shut up shop or closed - it's just that the new owner is not as readily available as Martyn was.
The original owner, Martyn Adams, sold up and moved to Australia and Serco changed hands, lock stock and barrel.
Ian Roberts now trades as Serco (New and used Tiger Cub spares and engineering). 2 Bracken Road, Brighouse, West Yorkshire, HD6 2HW.

Tony please let us know if you do contact Ian at SERO it would be good to know he is still trading!

If I go through my mobile bill I should be able to find a mobile number for him, if you need it.

I do know he is a bit tricky to get on his home/work phone.

Andreas,
I gleaned the info re SERCO from pre'65 Trials forum at:
http://www.trialscentral.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=27728
If you do manage to track down Ian at SERCO , best tell him about reports of his closure!!

It wouldn't be the same person who seems to be offloading tons of cub stuff on ebay? They're located in brighouse.

I've been trying t oget my engine back from Ian Roberts and reading the postings gather he's gone bust. I called last week and all closed up and no one in house or workshop. Better look on e-bay by the sound of it!

Pretty much in line with what I have experienced and been told. I used UPB http://www.upbuk.co.uk/pre65.html really nice chap and very helpful. Mind you nothing is cheap in Cub land these days!
Thanks to UPB the engine is now temporally back in the frame and I have had it briefly running, no bad noises and sounds remarkably quiet. Today I plan to spend an hour or so and try to tune it up a bit. If all is well the engine will come out and I can concentrate on the frame, swing arm and wheel
rebuild. (I think I need to win the lottery!)

Nice to hear that things are coming together for you Tony, albeit at a cost £££.
It's disheartening to hear of the once reputable name of SERCO being mired by one Ian Roberts. Seems that another good firm's bitten the dust.
Hope the remainder of your rebuild goes well, Tony.
